                                            The Legend of the Ghillieman
The story is told that in 1759 a family of Scotch-Irish immigrants
were traveling through SC in search of work. They set up a
makeshift camp near what is now the town of Liberty, SC. A lot
of the local folks didn’t take kindly to strangers from other
countries. It is said that the locals tried several times to run the
immigrant family off with no success. The Scotch-Irish are a
very strong-willed bunch! Well, things escalated between this
family and the locals till late one night a drunken group of
locals paid the family a visit…………things went very bad. Strong
words lead to a fight. The fight ended with the brutal slaying of
the entire family. The father, mother, grandmother, and four
children were murdered at their little camp in the woods.
As the locals left the scene congratulating each other, no one
noticed that Mr. Craig, the father was still moving. While badly
beaten, bleeding and broken, he crawled to his family. He
gathered them and buried them in a mass grave he dug with his
hands. Hs said his goodbyes to his loved ones and vowed to
protect them and never ever leave their side. It is said that
anyone, human or animal trying to pass through those woods at
night would never be seen again. Rumor soon spread that Mr.
Craig was now a part of those woods. People went looking for
him but never saw a sign of him although reports were often
given of a feeling of being watched while in those woods.
There is an old Celtic myth about a creature known as the
Ghillie Dhu. He is also known as “The GreenMan” the Dark
Servant of the woods. It has been said once the Ghillie Man
sees you YOU are never seen again.
